Frequently Asked Questions

Dentists are the primary oral healthcare providers in dentistry and usually the first port of call. Dentists diagnose and treat oral disease and disorders, extract teeth, conduct check ups, place fillings, crowns, and bridges. Dental technicians however, work in dental laboratories and make various oral prosthetics. Dentists and dental technicians work hand-in-hand to create an oral appliance suitable for you. Clinical dental technicians start their careers as dental technicians, but with further training in clinical environments are able to take impressions and manufacture full and partial dentures on-site at the dental laboratory.

Partial dentures will require an Oral Hygiene Certificate or referral from your dentist – this will advise which teeth are viable for stability and which have a poor prognosis and in turn will dictate the design of the partial denture.

Dentures are removable appliances designed to complete your smile and improve overall health. With use over time, they will help you eat better and restore confidence.

Dentures may be recommended if you’re missing all teeth, have multiple missing teeth, or have broken/unhealthy teeth. They are a less invasive solution to completing your smile. Your dentist or clinical dental technician can advise which to consider and provide solutions going forward, with relative indications and contraindications, advantages and disadvantages.

There are two main types: 1. Complete dentures: Replace all teeth and rest on the gums. 2. Partial Dentures: Replace only missing teeth while using the remaining dentition for stability and support. Partial dentures can be made of acrylic, or with use of Cobalt Chrome metal frameworks.

Prices vary depending on the type of denture, how many teeth are being replaced, and any components required. A rough price guide would be anywhere between $1000 to $4000 for most. Implant dentures are priced on assessment, as there are many different systems of implants, in some cases this can become more than the price guide mentioned.

Materials vary, but depending on the type of denture: 1. Mainly Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) denture bases and teeth. 2. Wrought stainless steel clasping and 3. Cobalt Chrome metal partial framework.

We make implant dentures, but implants can only be placed by a dental surgeon. So to have implant dentures made, you would need to have had the implants placed already. You need to see your dentist for this service.

Once you’re comfortable, you can eat most foods. We advise against foods that require pulling or tearing, sticky candy, and hard nuts. But by cutting food into smaller pieces and using the back teeth to chew, most foods can be enjoyed.

Yes! A new normal, let's say. There will be a period of adjustment, but eventually you’ll feel bare without them!

Dentures are made to be worn throughout the day. Best practice is to take them out overnight, this allows saliva to cleanse the tissues the dentures cover and also gives the gums some much needed rest. We do understand that this is not always possible. At the very least, having the dentures out for as long as possible in the morning or before bed, keeping up good oral hygiene by brushing the gums and remaining teeth with a soft bristle brush, and regular cleaning of the denture itself should be sufficient but we would always advise taking the dentures out and storing them in water overnight.

Initially, there may be an adjustment period, but most – if not all - people adapt well. Think of it like learning to chew again. We do recommend beginning with softer foods, and working your way up to harder textures.

The upper jaw is connected to the skull which means it does not move. Proper fit and suction will help the upper denture stay in place. Lower jaws however, create all the movement to allow for speaking and eating. This is why it is generally a lot harder to get lower dentures to stay in place. With good impression technique, and practice; movement will become more manageable. Dental implants can also enhance stability.

Yes, brushing your gums with a soft bristle toothbrush helps remove plaque and bacteria. Also, brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth daily.

No! We get a lot of enquiries about general dentistry; tooth extraction, crowns, bridges, fillings etc. but these are only done through a dentist. For the general public we manufacture and do repairs for dentures. We can also make mouthguards.
